THE ALLIANCE

is a group of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano producers that believes that now is the time to elevate and preserve a wine of true nobility

The Alliance strongly believes that now is the time to elevate and preserve a wine of true nobility, the Tuscan wine par excellence: the Nobile.

The Nobile that they’re promoting is 100% Sangiovese, a genuine wine with an outstanding ageing potential, fruit of an exceptional “terroir” that is capable of producing the most distinguished grapes in the world. A wine of elegance and finesse, yet accessible and versatile.

The producers of the Alliance have very diverse stories and backgrounds but they all share the dedication to Nobile’s rediscovery.  They are all directly involved in the day to day life of the winery and are committed to giving the proper voice to the Nobile, among Italy’s highest quality wines.

United they'll strive to restore Nobile’s badge of honor.

TERROIR

Its sandy-clay soils, together with a more temperate climate compared to other great areas of Tuscany, produce a unique Sangiovese here, harmonious and with a perfect sugar-acidity balance. These features allow producers to develop and enhance the wine’s aromatics with less cellar intervention. Rather small, with only 3200 acres (1300 hectares) all within the Montepulciano municipality, the growing area stretches between the hills around the Chiana Valley, southeast of the Siena province.

Sangiovese has always been the prince of Tuscan varietals

In Montepulciano, where it’s locally called Prugnolo Gentile, Sangiovese grapes have often been blended with other varietals. While respecting this blended identity, to best express the unique personality of Nobile’s terroir the Alliance growers promote a special selection, a single vineyard in some cases, made of 100% Sangiovese grapes.

IN THE GLASS

IN THE GLASS

At its first stages Nobile is a vibrant fresh glass and an ideal “food partner”

A young Nobile shows lighter red ruby colors and is a gorgeous basket of red fruit, rather small ones like dark cherry, blackberry, cherry, ripe strawberry, but also black plum, which often come with hints of earthiness too.

Nobile’s elegant medium body develops its power throughout the mouth with its gentle tannins.

Nobile’s fascinating balance sees it grow steady over decades, preserving an impressively compact mouth and a distinguishable fruit profile. Its bright color over time tends to a maroon-red and its aromatics become evolved, evoking tobacco, leather and minerality.

People and Families

Nobile is a boutique wine region. It is made of passionate people who have dedicated their lives to this incredibly fascinating business called winemaking

Most of the wineries here have been family run for generations. Others are guided by families who have moved here more recently, and have committed to a radical change of lifestyle. This guarantees that there will always be a story behind each winery and that the company vision will persist over time, an essential dimension for quality winemaking.

It’s undeniable that Nobile’s growing area is an ideal place to perform this life mission, thanks to the harmony that the terroir offers for quality winemaking, along with the knowhow that has developed over the centuries. The people and families that are in the area today are an example of modern excellence in this field. With investments of over 8mln Euro in the past 5 years, dedicated to environmental best practices, the Nobile producers have excelled in sustainability indexing and biodynamic management, particularly among the Alliance members.

A favorite bottle of Kings and Popes, during the Renaissance it was considered a symbol of quality winemaking all over Italy, to the point that when speaking about wine quality from Piedmont to Sicily one would refer to “The Montepulciano Style”. It’s precisely because of this that the first vine developments in Abruzzo were named after Montepulciano.

In the years though this has unfortunately created some confusion between the two wines: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.

To highlight its significant personality and speak in a more contemporary manner, the Alliance growers will refer to their wines simply as “Nobile” instead of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

This is the renaissance of an Italian classic.
